With soaring gas prices many people are clamoring for more fuel efficient vehicles. One such new vehicle, the Chrysler Aspen Hybrid, manages 19/20 mpg city/highway, versus an average of 13/18 mpg for the equivalent non-hybrid Chrysler Aspen. This is good news for people who need the power and versatility of an SUV but want to save at the pump. The Aspen has a starting price a little under $45,000 which is a few thousand less than its Hybrid SUV competition.

The Chrysler Aspen Hybrid comes in one trim, the Limited. The interior is roomy and the styling is contemporary. Four-wheel drive is standard, and the Aspen boasts a 5.7-liter Hemi V-8 for plenty of power along with its two-mode electrically variable transmission for fuel savings. The exterior’s styling is unique for its class and is not too similar to competing models. Its hybrid status is made known by small embalms on the side panes and tail gate. 18 inch chrome wheel are standard and other sizes are available.

Even though the Aspen is a full sized SUV it is also a full hybrid and can operate on electric power only or a combination of both electric and gas power. The cabin gauges allow the driver to monitor gas mileage, power flow, and tells you when you are using electricity or the engine, and when the battery is recharging. The Aspen does not, however, have a tachometer, as the gauge space is used for an economy gauge that indicates the best mix of fuel efficiency and power.

The Aspen can accelerate up to 25 miles per hour in electric only mode. This can be practical in stop and go city traffic when continuous light acceleration and stopping are necessary as the engine can operate in electric mode only. The engine switches to electric only during idle moments and the battery recharges while the vehicle is in motion. The 2009 Chrysler Aspen Hybrid is a good mix of a workhorse SUV and an economical hybrid. It has the power of a V8 engine and the fuel economy of a hybrid solving the dilemma facing many consumers who need the power and versatility of a SUV’s but also want the economy of a hybrid.
